Privacy Policy
Mumbo (“we”, “us”) is a talking phrasebook app, independently developed and operated by its developer. This policy explains what data the Mumbo app and the getmumbo.com website collect, why, and what your rights are.
The short version
- Your voice is processed in real time to transcribe and translate it — audio is not stored.
- Live conversations are saved as text on your device so you can read them back. They are never sent to us, and deleting the app deletes them.
- We don't sell your data and we don't show ads.
- You can delete your account and all your data from inside the app at any time.
What we collect
- Account data — your email address, the name you give us, and your sign-in method (email/password, Sign in with Apple, or Google Sign-In). Passwords are stored hashed.
- Your phrases — the text of phrases you practice (the transcription of what you said and its translation), lines you star in a live conversation, favorites, and your drill results. This is the content of the product; it syncs so your history is where you left it.
- Settings — your language pair, app language, and time zone (so daily limits reset at your midnight).
- Purchase status — which pass you bought and whether it is active, via RevenueCat and the app store you bought it from. We never see or store your card number.
- Diagnostics — technical logs to keep the app working: errors, API request outcomes, and app events (for example that a practice session started or a purchase failed), together with your app version, platform, a random install identifier, and your account. Diagnostics never include your voice, transcripts, or the content of your phrases. They are stored on our own servers in the EU (Nuremberg, Germany) and automatically deleted after 30 days.
Your voice
When you speak to Mumbo, the audio is streamed to Soniox, a third-party AI speech service, to be transcribed, translated, and — where the feature calls for it — spoken back. This happens in real time. We do not store the audio. In a live conversation (Talk), the other person's speech is processed the same way.
The text of a live conversation is saved on your device, so you can go back and read what was said. It stays there: it is not uploaded, it is not part of your account, and we never receive it. You can delete any conversation, or all of them, from inside the app, and uninstalling removes them with everything else the app stored. The most recent conversations are kept and older ones are dropped automatically.
A line you star is different: that one is saved to your phrase history, which does sync to your account, because that is what makes it available to practice later.
Who we share data with
We share data only with the processors needed to run the service:
- Soniox — third-party AI for real-time speech recognition, translation, and speech synthesis. The app asks for your permission before any audio is sent.
- RevenueCat — purchase management.
- Apple — sign-in and App Store payments; Google — sign-in. Only if you use them.
- Our hosting provider — where your account and phrase history live.
- Expo — app updates. The app checks for improvements when it starts, which tells Expo your device type and app version. No account data is involved.
We do not sell personal data and we do not use third-party advertising or tracking.
How long we keep it
Your data is kept while your account exists. Deleting your account in the app's settings removes your account and your phrase history. Backup copies are purged on a rolling schedule shortly after. Records of purchases are kept for as long as accounting and tax law requires us to keep them, even after the account they belonged to is gone.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under the GDPR), you have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to processing, and to complain to your local data-protection authority. Most of this you can do directly in the app; for anything else, email us and we'll help.
Children
Mumbo is not directed at children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
International transfers
Our processors may handle data outside your country. Where required, transfers are covered by appropriate safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
Changes
We'll post any changes to this policy here and update the effective date. Material changes will be announced in the app.
